The V. Rangasamy Naidu Educational Trust devoted to the cause of promoting technical and scientific literacy, established Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT) in 1956. CIT is one of the most reputed and prestigious educational institutions in South India since 1956. The Institute backed by World Class research and development attained autonomous attained autonomous status in 1987and is affiliated to the Anna University of Technology.

ABOUT MECHANICAL DEPARTMENT:
One of the founding departments of Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT), the Mechanical Engineering Department has played a leading role in evolving an ‘Engineering Science’ based curriculum. Today, the department of mechanical engineering of CIT attracts and features an extraordinary rich diversity and quantity of talented individuals, with nearly 500 undergraduates which includes full time and part time, 60 graduate students and over 25 faculty members. The department served as a role model for many academic institutes in and around Coimbatore, Tamilnadu. Apart from teaching undergraduate and post graduate students, the faculty of Mechanical Engineering actively pursues research through graduate students and research scholars. Over the years, interaction with industry and the emphasis on applied engineering has increased. Continued research and development have led to better machines and processes helping the mankind.
The key features of the department includes a "Center Of Excellence in Manufacturing Sciences",a "IWS research cell" and an "IC Engine Research Cell".
